pittsburgh prison cats

logo design, apparel, & promotional sign

located on the three rivers heritage trail and ohio river, stands the once functioning western state penitentiary (also known as state correctional institute-pittsburgh). while this building has a rich history of a civil war jail, there's a lesser known secret about the area: it's home to a colony of feral grey tabby cats. affectionately known as the "pittsburgh prison cats" by their caretakers, the prison cats have been established in this area for decades. the goal of the pittsburgh prison cats is to educate visitors of what TVNR (trap, vaccinate, neuter, and release) is and to generate donation efforts to continue porky's mission.

when developing a logo for the prison cats, a friendly and welcoming feeling was expressed by the client, along with being able to use for social media and apparel purposes. it was ultimately decided to have two logos: a primary, friendly logo that would become associated with the prison cats, and a type based secondary logo that could also be used on apparel when necessary. in 2022, the addition of a promotional sign was added to "cat cove" to further the educational efforts caretakers are working on via social media efforts. while the caretakers' goal of ultimately being able to rehome the cat colony to loving families, they understand this effort will never fully be done and are doing all they can to protect, feed, and raise awareness for the pittsburgh prison cats.
